Whether you’re relaxing on a sunny afternoon or celebrating with friends, the Paloma is always a great choice.

What’s Celebrated on May 22: Paloma Day

Paloma Day is dedicated to one of the most iconic cocktails from Mexico. It’s the perfect time to discover—or rediscover—this drink, which has gained international fame thanks to its fresh, bubbly, and perfectly balanced flavor.
From upscale bars to casual gatherings, the Paloma is the cocktail that never goes out of style.

The Origins of Paloma Day

While it doesn’t have a long official history like some classic cocktails, the Paloma has earned a special place in the hearts of tequila lovers. Its exact origin is uncertain, but many believe it was created in Mexico in the mid-20th century as a lighter alternative to the classic Margarita. Some say it’s named after a popular Mexican folk song from the early 1860s, but its exact origin remains unknown.

What we do know is that today, it’s one of the most ordered cocktails in bars and restaurants worldwide, thanks to its perfect combination of tequila, grapefruit juice, and soda. According to the 2024 Drinks International report, Altos is the most popular tequila used in this serve, with 20% of the vote among top bars worldwide.

The Paloma is not only beloved in Mexico—it has crossed borders and earned recognition from bartenders and mixologists around the globe. In fact, it’s estimated that 40% of tequila consumption in Mexico happens in the form of Paloma cocktails, reinforcing its place as one of the country’s most representative drinks.

It’s also a fantastic way to enjoy the authentic flavor of tequila—no fuss required.

If you want to make a full-flavored, authentic version, here’s the Crafted Paloma recipe. We asked Rodrigo García, former Altos Brand Ambassador in Mexico, to find inspiration in the classic cocktail and reinterpret it to reflect the hand-crafted spirit of Altos’ production process. The result is a modern take that embraces our premium tequila and highlights fresh ingredients.
